Common Problems

Treatment from Your Pasco & Richland, WA Orthodontist

Your Pasco and Richland, WA orthodontist, Dr. Scott Ostler sees many patients at his orthodontic practice, Ostler Orthodontics. In fact, many patients receive orthodontic treatment because their teeth or jaw structure do not fit perfectly together. By leaving these “bad bites” untreated, you increase the chance of injury to your teeth and jaw joints. However, by seeing Dr. Ostler and his wonderful team, you will be able to straighten any misalignments, which in turn will promote ideal function and oral health.

Dr. Ostler defines an underbite as the extension of the lower jaw outward, causing the lower front teeth to sit in front of the upper front teeth.

Patients who have missing teeth may experience spacing problems. However, the spacing issues may only be a cosmetic or an aesthetic issue, according to your Pasco and Richland orthodontist.

Upper Front Teeth Protrusion

Your orthodontist, Dr. Ostler, notes that in upper front teeth protrusions, the upper teeth extend too far forward, or the lower teeth do not extend far enough.

Crowding occurs when teeth do not have enough room to erupt from the gum. Dr. Ostler can often correct overcrowded teeth, in many cases, through the technique of expansion to avoid tooth removal.

In a crossbite, the upper teeth sit inside the lower teeth. Orthodontic specialist Dr. Ostler notes that crossbites may cause problems, such as tooth stratification and misaligned jaw growth.

Patients who have an overbite experience the extension of the upper front teeth out and over the lower front teeth. Sometimes, overbites cause the lower front teeth to bite into the roof of the mouth.

Openbites occur when the upper and lower front teeth do not overlap. Dr. Ostler further states that this type of bite impacts proper chewing and may cause a number of unwanted habits, such as tongue thrusting.

Unmatched Dental Midlines

This type of problem is caused when the back bite does not fit and match appropriately, which may negatively impact jaw and proper dental function.
